3 Ways To Make Selling Scrap Metal More Profitable

If you are looking for a way to make a little extra money, there are a lot of things that you can do. One of the things that you can do is to sell scrap metal. Selling scrap metal does a couple of things: one is that it provides you with some extra cash, and another is that it gets the metal out of the waste stream and into the recycling stream. Metal is basically endlessly recyclable, which means that the metal that was in your first car could now be in your new car. If you are going to gather scrap metal and sell it back, there are some things that you can do that will make it easier on you:

Ask Permission

If you are going to go on someone else's property to get scrap metal, make sure that you talk to them about it beforehand. Otherwise, they can have you arrested for trespassing or for theft. It's easy enough to make sure that you talk to the property owner and whoever owns the metal. Depending on what it is they may want to have a little bit of money for the metal, so be prepared for them to ask or to offer them a little compensation.

Clean the Metal

Make sure that you clean up the metal before you take it in to be sold. That doesn't mean that it has to be shiny and perfect, but you do want to have things like electrical insulation or other coverings stripped off the metal. The best reason to do this is that you may be able to get more money when you make sure that the metal is nice and clean. Otherwise the scrap metal company you sell to will have to do that on their own, which will take more work on their part so they will offer less money.

Organize It

You want to also make sure that you have the metal as organized as possible. This means that you are going to want to have wires nicely bundled up, cans smashed down, and the types of metal separated out as much as possible. If you have the metals separated out it should be easier for you to finish the process and get paid. The metals are different prices per pound, and the scrap metal buyer is going to want to make sure that they are paying the proper amount, so they would have to separate it out for you if you haven't done so already.
